Keeping yourself safe in the dream can be done in two ways. First things first, you’ll need some weapons. Dreamers can use any weapons they find around – swords, bows, pistols, rifles, morningstars and more besides. On their own, they may not be much to look at, but dreamers can use the power of dreamcraft to augment them in innumerable ways.
Whilst you explore the dream, you may encounter various random objects – plates and cups in the kitchen, books and toys in your bedroom, pencils and calculators at school. In the dream, they’re useful tools.
Dreamcraft involves taking different traits from these items and infusing them into your weapons. If you dreamcraft your rifle and a drinking glass, you can give it the [Lens] trait and make your long-range shots more accurate. Dreamcraft a sword and some matchsticks, and you can use the [Tinderbox] trait to set your weapon on fire, letting it do fire damage.
The possibilities of dreamcraft are almost endless – each weapon can hold up to three dreamcraft traits, so you can mix and match until you construct weapons capable of taking on even the strongest of monsters. Defeating some of these monsters may cause them to drop items that can be used for even more powerful dreamcraft.
Build weapons exactly to your specifications – do you want a sword that you can control with your mind? A gun that causes whatever you shoot to teleport somewhere else? A knife that explodes whenever it makes contact with a monster? If you find the right items, anything is possible in Dancing In Limbo.
Every dreamer also has another important ally – an extension of their own personality, given form by an object of great personal significance, known as a familiar.
Every familiar is completely unique to each dreamer. Players can customise exactly what sort of familiar they have – perhaps your phone becomes a small robot to protect you, or a childhood doll comes to life, or a family heirloom grows into a mighty protector.
As an extension of your personality, familiars are intimately familiar with you; they know your thoughts and feelings, and represent parts of yourself. Which parts of yourself a familiar represents will vary from dreamer to dreamer. Whatever your familiar turns out to be, remember this: your familiar is utterly devoted to you, and together, you may stand a chance against the monsters.
